5. The Death Of Julie Dwyer - Clerks (1994)/Mallrats (1995)
Maybe the name Julie Dwyer doesn't instantly ring a bell to you, but she plays an important part in two cult comedies from the '90s. In Clerks, we first learn of Julie's passing in a YMCA swimming pool from Dante and Randall. Julie, one of the few ladies who had been willing to sleep with Dante, is never actually seen in the movie. The titular clerks do close up the shop for a brief amount of time in the mid-afternoon to attend Julie's wake. When they knock over her casket, the guys race back to the Quick Stop to spend the remainder of the day arguing with customers and traumatizing Caitlin Bree. Kevin Smith's sophomore effort, Mallrats, begins with a description of Julie's death. Julie, who was supposed to be on Brandi Svening's father's game show, died after an "embolism popped in her brain and she dropped dead, right in mid-backstroke." (Note: emboli don't pop; she meant an aneurysm.) This moment leads to Brandi being the contestant on the dating show and her and T.S. breaking up again instead of going on vacation to Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.
