10 Hard Hitting Foreign Action Films

6. District 13 (2004, France)

D13 2

David Belle, who is credited with starting Parkour, stars in District 13 which was written and produced by one of the masters of modern action, Luc Besson. This movie is celebrated for action scenes which completely are free of wires or computer graphics. The film takes place in 2010, where crime and and poverty have become a massive problem, especially in Banlieue 13, refered to as B13. To solve the problem, the government has blocked of B13 with walls, barbed wire and armed police check points leading in and out. With no government intervention, the gangs now rule blocks of the district, except for one high rise which is run by Leïto (Belle). Leïto tries to keep his people safe while battling the drug dealers. After rescuing his sister from a drug lord named Taha, Leïto tries to turn Taha over to the police. There is a twist and Leïto is put into prison instead and Leïto's sister is forced back into B13 with Taha and his gang. Six months later, police captain Damien (Cyril Raffaelli) is being sent into B13 to retrieve a neutron bomb which was stolen by Taha. But he needs Leïto's help so he breaks Leïto out of prison. The pair must fight, jump and run through the B13 in order to retrieve the bomb. Starring the creator of Parkour means that the the standard is pretty high for action and they don't let up. The other star of the film, Cyril Raffaelli, is as talented as Belle and the pair perform some heart stopping stunts. Interestingly enough, this movie was remade in 2010 as Brick Mansions and is going to be released in 2014 starring the recently deceased Paul Walker.
