10 Harry Potter Book Characters We Wish Were In The Movies

4. The Gaunts

Harry Potter fans love to discuss which of Harry’s adventures is the best one. Whilst there’s no obvious answer to this question, the sixth book in the franchise is a strong contender.

During this penultimate adventure, we learn about Voldemort’s past via the Pensieve. The first memory involves the Gaunts, a twisted magical family who are descended from Slytherin.

Marvolo and his son Morfin are both obsessed with their pure-blood ancestry and they hate muggles. Meropie, the daughter, is actually Voldemort’s mother and she falls in love with a handsome young man called Tom Riddle. This insight into Voldemort’s past, though by no means essential, is a standout moment in The Half-Blood Prince.

There isn’t another chapter like ‘The House of Gaunt’. The family shack is grubby, dank, and rather creepy, and it’s the perfect setup for Dumbledore’s first meeting with Voldemort at the London orphanage.

Whilst there are certainly more important moments in Harry’s sixth year, the Gaunts enrich Voldemort’s backstory significantly.
