10 Harry Potter Characters Who Are Way Better In The Books

7. Rita Skeeter

Rita Skeeter is a nasty journalist with an appetite for libel. She loves to cause a scandal and enjoys ruining people’s reputations.

Rita first makes an appearance in The Goblet of Fire when she reports on the Triwizard Tournament and dupes her readers into thinking Harry, Hermione, and Krum are involved in a love triangle.

Whilst this is briefly touched upon in the movies, Rita is one of the most hateable characters in the books. As well as portraying Hermione as a promiscuous teenager, she presents Harry as a mentally-unhinged attention-seeker and ruins Hagrid’s reputation by informing the world that he’s a half-giant.

Her words have severe consequences, too. In the wake of her articles, Hermione receives hate mail in the post, and Hagrid hides away in his hut. As for Harry, Rita’s article about his mental well-being becomes the foundation for discrediting his story about Voldemort’s return.

All these extra details make Rita so much nastier. In fact – with the possible exception of Professor Umbridge – she’s the most hateable character in the books. Yet in the movies, she’s little more than a mild irritant.
