The Gaunt family was a pure-blood family who had a tendency of marrying their cousins to keep their bloodline pure. The family were also direct ancestors to one of Hogwarts' founders, Salazar Slytherin - meaning they were able to speak Parseltongue.

Marvolo Gaunt was often abusive towards his daughter Merope, as she was believed to be a squib due to the emotional trauma towards her often making it difficult for her to perform magic. However, Merope's brother, Morfin, would terrorise Muggles by jinxing them.

Despite her family being against Muggles, Merope fell in love with a Muggle man, Tom Riddle. When her father found out of Merope's fondness towards the Muggle, both Morfin and Marvolo attacked her but were arrested by the Ministry.

Merope manipulated Tom by using either the Imperious Curse or a love potion to fall in love with her and get married together. She eventually broke Riddle free from this mental enslavement when she was pregnant, in the hopes he would stay with her. Unfortunately, Tom left Merope immediately and went back to his family's home.

Following the birth of her son - Tom Riddle Jr., aka Voldemort - Merope went to an orphanage and died without warning within an hour of the birth.
