10 Hidden Details In Opening And Closing Movie Scenes You Completely Missed

5. 1917 - The War Still Rages On

Sam Mendes’s Oscar-winning epic, 1917, may be a stunning visual experiment, but it’s also a gritty and realistic depiction of life in World War I.

The film centres on two young soldiers living life in the trenches, Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman), who are given the mission to hand-deliver a message to another Battalion.

It opens with an asleep Schofield laying against a tree, right next to Blake. Here they are woken up by another soldier, setting the events of the film in motion. The film closes with Schofield laying against a tree again (however, this time with no Blake), having finally completed their mission.

The ending hits us with the harsh reality that ultimately not much has changed. Yes, Schofield and Blake’s mission has been completed, and the two of them have saved a load of lives, but ultimately the war still rages on, and will continue for many years to come.
