10 Hidden Horror Movie Gems From 2020s (So Far)

6. The Power

Set in 1974 and featuring an extremely atmospheric hospital setting, Corinna Faith's The Power is a delicate, deliberate supernatural picture headlined by a brilliant Rose Williams.

Williams plays Val, a young woman who starts a new job at London's Royal Infirmary. Unfortunately for Val, her positivity and eagerness to impress finds her actually punished. And in terms of that punishment, that means working night shifts which take place at the same time as scheduled blackouts. So, this creepy hospital is made all the more creepy as its corridors are reduced to pitch-black at set intervals.

While The Power is obviously a spooky, unsettling film, just as haunting is the larger message of the sexism and elitism of the time period. Despite Val doing nothing wrong, she's berated and beaten down merely for being a woman and working class; something which is sadly still scarily prevalent in certain sections of modern society.

The Power is a thoughtful, beautifully crafted movie, yet it's largely flown under the radar since it was released to Shudder in 2021. Thankfully, this underappreciated gem can still be found on the on-demand streaming service here in 2023.
