10 High Grossing 2015 Films That Actually Made No Profit
9. Black Mass
Production Budget: $53,000,000 Worldwide Gross: $80,458,268 Estimated Losses: $25,541,732 Johnny Depp has always had a box office problem in any movie that doesn't involve him playing Captain Jack Sparrow or him being directed by Tim Burton. Black Mass is just the latest Depp movie to underperform despite heavy promotion. Depp played notorious American gangster Whitey Bulger and was generally praised for the role for doing something different than his quirky characters. However, Black Mass did not perform well outside of the United States, only grossing $18.5 million from international markets. Depp's box office appeal is typically stronger overseas than it is the United States, with movies like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Tourist, Dark Shadows, and Alice In Wonderland making more than two-thirds of their grosses outside of the States. Perhaps Black Mass was too much of an American-centric story to appeal to international audiences, or maybe they just prefer like seeing Depp play typically outlandish Depp characters rather than cold-blooded gangsters.
