10 Highest Ever Grossing Movies Released In May - Ranked From Worst To Best

7. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Domestic Gross: $431,088,295 What is there to say about Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace that hasn't been said already? Nothing, perhaps - though it might feel like something of a fresh claim to state that the movie probably isn't quite as horrible to gaze upon now, 15 years later, as it was when giddy fans first crammed themselves into theatres back in 1999, awaiting what they probably assumed was going to be the greatest movie of all time. The levels of hype pretty much assured Episode I wouldn't live up to the expectations; Jar Jar Binks practically made it impossible. George Lucas made a lot of terrible choices when putting together the first flick in his prequel trilogy, mainly in his decision to write the thing himself... but as a cultural artifact, Episode I is still as intriguing as ever, warts and all. What's most interesting about The Phantom Menance comes when looking at what works; there are elements to be appreciated, such as the action scenes (the Podracing sequence is still as thrilling today as it ever was), John Williams' score, and Liam Neeson's turn as Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn. Hey, for what it's worth, at least it's not boring.
