What is remarkable is that there was only 10 years in between the end of the prequels and the start of the sequels which was led by The Force Awakens. Star Wars had barely left the screen before there were plans for the next instalment led by Disney but despite this audiences still lapped it up.

The Force Awakens had the near impossible job of attempting to satisfy fans of the original trilogy while rebooting it for a new viewer and its ability to cater to both audiences resulted in a record-breaking box office.

It overtook Jurassic World to become the highest grossing film of 2015 and - unadjusted for inflation - is the highest grossing film of the franchise and the fourth highest grossing film of all time. However, when adjusted for inflation there is one other from the franchise which beats it...
