10 Highest Grossing Sci-Fi Films Of All Time (Adjusted For Inflation)

2. Star Wars

E T BOX OFFICE
20th Century Fox

ADJUSTED FOR INFLATION: $3.049 billion

ORIGINAL BOX OFFICE: $775.5 million

Star Wars quite literally defined the modern blockbuster as we know it today. Jaws may have technically been the first film which ruled at the box office for weeks on end but Star Wars had audiences queuing around the block for hours to venture to a galaxy far, far away.

The 1977 epic also defined fandoms as we know them today and led the way with its subsequent sequels to prove how lucrative a franchise could be.

Putting the long term repercussions to one side, the original tale of Luke Skywalker grossed a staggering $775.5 million at the box office which in today's money works out to a tad over $3 billion, not far off the highest grossing sci-fi film of all time.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
