Given how well-received Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker was in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy sandwich filling, it's quite a surprise that Rotten Tomatoes' metric only ranks it third overall. It's also an incorrect appraisal.
The Dark Knight might be better described as a post-superhero movie, since Nolan so gleefully deconstructed accepted tropes, but it still sits consciously within the genre. And it's still the best movie ever released in the genre, without question.
It's gloriously well-written, features not one but three great performances (five if you count Gary Oldman and Michael Caine, which you probably should) and the swagger and atmosphere Nolan builds is just as good as the personality Tim Burton built into his far more cartoonish, Gothic Gotham.
