Way back when Fox made X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it must have been unthinkable to fans that we'd get to the end of 2017 with a great Deadpool movie and a truly stunning Wolverine movie. That film could easily have killed both characters as viable franchise options.

But while Wolverine stumbled a little (though The Wolverine is fine), the studio recognised the brand power in the berserker and kept him about, eventually realising (thanks to Deadpool, partly) that R-Rated comic book movies could be a smart option after all. And thank God they did.

The result of that inspirational thought was a last gunslinger movie with a broken Wolverine in what amounts to a post-apocalyptic world (or at least a post-Mutant one), with absolutely devastating emotional punches and the right end to his story. It was hard going, but it was utterly rewarding along the way too.
