Marvel's latest addition to their sprawling franchise is possibly the most surprising chapter in the MCU. Despite the fact that it deals with genocide, patriarchal death, alienation, isolation and the weight of responsibility, it's a comedy, with some classic Taika Waititi touches.

Chris Hemsworth's performance is the stand-out (along with new character Korg, OBVIOUSLY), but almost everything - from the new characters to Waititi's perfectly observed sci-fi tone - is intelligently and precisely crafted. There are a few issues - like the housecleaning of old characters at the start - but it's a stand-alone to be proud of and offers lots of hope for Marvel potentially broadening out into proper comedy.

And given how well it rescued Thor as a stand-alone character, Marvel should be very grateful to the director.
