9. Lorna (1964)
This is Russ Meyer (aka King Leer) at the beginning of his film career. The film is what would have then been called a 'roughie' - a mixture of sexploitation and violence. Lorna is married to Jim. He works and studies a lot and pays little attention to her. She is extremely sexually frustrated as a result. One day she goes for a little skinny dip in the river and an escaped convict catches hold of her and rapes her. Finally sexually satisfied, she invites the convict to her house during the days to service her. Meanwhile Jim's friends and workmates tease him over Lorna's sexiness and infidelity. Going home early home day, he finds Lorna in flagrante delicto. We can see the genesis of many recurrent Russ Meyer themes in Lorna - crappy, powerless, sexually inadequate men, strong beautiful women with big boobs and insatiable sex drives, a mix of both strong sex and strong violence, messages about morality and religion. Lorna Maitland is certainly very beautiful and is quite the temptress in the movie. It is easy to see how men would fight and go beserk over her charms. The violence, as in all RM films, is gratuitous but horribly realistic - you are taken from the world of sex and flung straight into violence. The black and white photography and enthusiastic editing is assuredly handled by Russ Meyer. It's a basic human tale about human lust and a damn fine kinky picture.
