You might think this bizarre sci-fi movie about a talking duck was cheaply thrown together for a quick profit, but no, the production of Howard the Duck was actually ridiculously complicated.

First of all, the budget for this movie was $37,000,000, and that was in 1986. Adjusted for inflation, that's just about $80 million dollars.

The film was produced by George Lucas just a few years after Return of the Jedi. Although it was originally going to be animated, Lucas decided they would create suits and puppets instead, and it quickly became clear the effects weren't coming along as easily as planned.

On the first day of shooting, the crew realized you could clearly see inside the puppet's neck every time the mouth opened. The effects were being improved on the fly, leading to a number of scenes being reshot later because the crew had worked out the kinks in the animatronics by then.

Remember that stupid gag when Howard's feathers stick up during a love scene? Yeah, that took the crew months to prepare for. In terms of the Howard suit, over the course of the film six different actors would play the duck. And during that dumb diner scene, the crew used ILM visual effects, air canons and squibs.

All of this to create a dumb talking duck movie that would become one of the biggest flops in history.
