Sam Raimi's seminal comedy-horror classic, Evil Dead 2 is nearly like a comic remake of the first Evil Dead which played it relatively straight. Once again, a group of young people end up in a remote forest in the woods. They are struck down by demonic forces one by one leaving Ash to be the hero. Bruce Campbell, reprising his role as Ash, has a great comedic presence - especially whenever he is doing battle with his own possessed hand which flips him the bird. This is probably the highlight of the film. Campbell's different facial expressions during the film are worth the price of admission alone. The movie is amusingly over the top in its gore with flying eyeballs, chainsaw mayhem and buckets of blood being sloshed everywhere. It is technically superior to its predecessor but still retains a fear factor, despite the comedy, which gives it an edge. A good horror comedy should combine thrills along with laughter and Evil Dead 2 is a winning combination. The film has aged very well despite the relative crudeness of the special effects compared to contemporary horror films. There are ample goods in the film to satisfy both comedy and horror films, and it must be rated as an all time horror-comedy classic.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
