10 Hilariously Awful Cry-Faces That Ruined Moving Scenes
3. Ewan McGregor - Moulin Rouge!
Much like the film itself, Ewan McGregor's big crying scene during the end of Moulin Rouge! is highly divisive. Some - especially those who buy into the frenzied hyperactivity and garish aplomb of Luhrmann's vision - find the moment shattering, as we see the character's heart flayed open by the death of his love. But there are others who are turned off, considering this yet another moment where the film's bombast is to its detriment. Now, even those who like the scene and the film can probably understand its polarizing effect. In this scene McGregor doesn't just sob, he SOBS. So many things jump out about his acting, from the painful and almost frightening pause he has before the first bout of crying escapes him, to the heavily dramatic way his face is lit during the scene. It all contributes to a moment that can be involving if one has surrendered to the film's huge and wild spirit, but crucially it also detracts for someone who is looking for something with greater emotional specificity and nuance.

A devoted fan of all film genres and styles, Adam gets equally giddy over the sensitive, existential musings of Ingmar Bergman, and the brawny brilliance of Arnold Schwartzenegger. He loves fish tacos and misses the work of Heath Ledger and Jack Lemmon on a daily basis.
