10 Hit Movies That Somehow Never Got A Sequel
8. Con Air
The late 1980's to late 1990's was the Golden Age of action cinema and while Con Air may not be lauded by critics as one of the greats in an era that featured Die Hard, Speed, Terminator 2, Hard Boiled, The Rock and others, it is without a doubt one of the craziest and purely entertaining.
Giving an A-list budget to a B-movie premise that ranks among the highest of high-concepts, filling the cast out with talented character actors and packing in as many batsh*t insane action sequences as possible is a dream for any fan of action cinema, and Simon West's debut feature did not disappoint. Apart from that bloody LeAnn Rimes song.
The movie ends with Cameron Poe and his mullet earning the trust and respect of John Cusack's Vince Larkin while Steve Buscemi's Garland Greene remains on the loose, seemingly setting up a number of avenues for a sequel. A $224m box office total only increased the speculation, but it never came to pass.
In the intervening 20 years West, Cusack and Cage have all expressed an interest in making a follow-up, but that's hardly surprising given that all three are stuck in the doldrums of straight-to-video action flicks. West's pitch? Con Air... in space. Jerry Bruckheimer, just give him the money.
