Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the Terminator franchise did not make much of a splash in crowded U.S. multiplexes this summer and will end up grossing less in America than 2009's Arnold-less Terminator Salvation. So far, Terminator Genisys is the first movie in the series since the 1984 original not to make at least $100 million at the U.S. box office. That looked like bad news for Skydance Productions and Paramount, which were hoping to make at least one more sequel before the rights to the franchise revert to creator James Cameron in 2019.

As it turns out, Terminator fans might get that sequel after all since the film has grossed nearly $350 million outside the U.S. Genisys amassed its massive international box office by becoming a huge hit in many smaller countries because of Schwarzenegger’s star power, including Singapore, Colombia, Peru, Vietnam, Argentina, and Turkey, as well as doing strong business in Russia and Brazil. Surprisingly, the movie has grossed $22.5 million in South Korea alone.

Most impressively, it has already grossed over $100 million in China even though it didn’t even open there until August 23. Terminator Genisys now stands as the second highest-grossing Terminator film worldwide, behind only the all-time classic Terminator 2: Judgment Day. To paraphrase the Terminator in the movie, Schwarzenegger might be old, but his box office power is not obsolete.
