Here's a myth everyone believes simply because they
want to believe that it actually happened. The rumour has been running rampant for around three decades that Gere wound up in L.A.s Cedars-Sinai Hospital after taking a gerbil and...putting it up his butt. Legend generally implies that it was a sexual act of some kind, and in likely trying to take the high road, Gere rarely talks about it (though in 2008, he did remark, "I just decided not to pay attention to any of it. Its a waste of energy"). Though some fake press releases surrounding the incident will make it clear to most that this is likely a fabrication, it's one that nevertheless continues to persist today, and is even referenced semi-frequently in pop culture.
