10 Home Invasion Horror Movies With A Twist

1. Funny Games (2007)

Martyrs 2008

One of the few English-language remakes that is equally as good, if not more so, than the original, Michael Haneke 2007 version of Funny Games is a shot-for-shot remake of his 1997 original, with a more well-known cast.

Ann (Naomi Watts) and George Farber (Tim Roth), and their son Georgie (Devon Gearhart) are on holiday at their quiet lake house, when Peter and Paul (Brady Corbet and Michael Pitt), a pair of mild-mannered young men dressed in white, begin to casually worm their way inside the house using manners and charm. Things turn nasty with a golf club to George's leg, and soon the Farbers are being held hostage in their home, forced to play a series of sadistic games in order to stay alive.

Peter and Paul kill the neighbours, they kill the dog, they kill Georgie, and then Ann kills Peter with a shotgun. But neither Paul nor Haneke will let the Farbers nor the viewers have this win. Paul grabs the TV remote, rewinds the scene and does things over again, grabbing the shotgun before Ann can shoot. This is not the only time Paul breaks the fourth wall, but is it by far the most significant, turning the film into a game that nobody is allowed to win.

Yay.
