10 Home Invasion Horror Movies With A Twist

9. Mother! (2017)

Martyrs 2008
Paramount Pictures

Far from being your typical home invasion movie, Darren Aronofsky's Mother! begins its life on-screen as something of a domestic fable, following the childless Mother (Jennifer Lawrence), who spends her days cleaning and renovating the mansion she shares with her reclusive and temperamental poet husband, Him (Javier Bardem). A stranger (Ed Harris) becomes an unexpected guest in their home and soon his quarrelling family follow. Before she knows it, Mother's mansion is filled with unknown faces who seem adamant on making it their own while simultaneously tearing the place apart.

While the biblical allegory at the core of the film may be too heavy handed for some to see past, this is merely a jumping off point for deeper commentary surrounding gender politics, particularly male artistry at the expense of the supplicant, accommodating and perpetually suffering female.

Gradually transposing its action to the grandest of scales, Mother!'s home invasion is literally of humanity on mother nature. And the raw performances, experimental cinematography and intense sense of claustrophobia and invasion of privacy that Aronofsky develops with every scene make it essential viewing for anyone who takes cinema seriously.
