9. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Robert Wiene 1920)
In a German Carnival, Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss) performs a show where he controls a somnambulist (sleepwalker) named Casere (Conrad Veidt). He keeps him sleeping at all times, when he is not performing he sleeps in a cabinet shaped like a coffin. During the show Casere takes questions from the audience and predicts the future. Outside of the show, Caligari orders Casere to commit murders to fulfill Casere's predictions. This film is one of the more debatable items on the list. While, not officially called a zombie movie, it does have elements used in the zombie genre. Casere, like zombies, is not really in control of his own mind but is forced to kill because of a drive instilled in him from a foreign body. One thing that separates him from the other zombies on the list is that he is not undead; instead he is a sleepwalker. However, he looks and acts like he's undead enough to include him on the list.
