Isn't high school difficult enough without a psychopathic, controlling mother getting in the way too? Margaret White has become convinced that her daughter Carrie is an instrument of the devil, and thus lays down a firm regimen of religious teachings and physical abuse. What hurts Carrie the most, though, is denying her from going to the prom, seeing it as indicative of sin, and of course, the Devil. Granted, Carrie does turn out to be telekinetic, and attending the prom does cause this to announce itself by way of violently murdering most of her school mates before collapsing her own home in upon herself and her mother - but still, is there not a more sensitive way for Margaret to help her daughter? With a few nudges here and there, Carrie might have been able to function within society, instead of becoming the destructive outcast that causes so much chaos at the film's finale.
