1968’s Night Of The Living Dead may have been the first gory mainstream film, but it certainly wasn’t the first to feature scenes of blood and guts. Before then, in 1960, there was a little French melancholy horror movie called Eyes Without A Face.

Eyes Without A Face was a film about a doctor who murders women so he can transplant their faces onto his daughter, who sadly became horribly disfigured in a car accident. As it was made in 1960, it’s a lot tamer than horror movies that are be released today, but there was one scene that was so horrific that people who went to see it at the Edinburgh Film Festival fainted.

The scene in question is possibly the first scene to feature de-masking, as the doctor performs surgery to remove the face of one of his victims. It’s a very prolonged, very detailed sequence that absolutely nobody was prepared for at the time. Because of this, critics attacked the movie with negativity, causing the film to became quite rare and underground before recent re-releases by the BFI helped show it in a new light as a masterpiece of classic horror.

What didn’t help was the American release which re-dubbed and mocked the entire affair by calling The Horror Chamber Of Dr. Faustus. If this didn’t happen, perhaps this film would’ve garnered the respect it deserves.
