10 Horrific Horror Movie Scenes You Can’t Unsee
6. Dagon - A Violent De-Masking
Stuart Gordon is best known as the director responsible for some of the best Lovecraftian adaptations put to film. Dagon, however, stands out amongst them all as the most disturbing adaptation. Re-Animator, Castle Freak and From Beyond were quite gory in their own rights, but they were also incredibly cheesy and silly, and the gore was used for comedic effect. There is nothing comedic about Dagon.
Dagon is an adaptation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and it is incredibly faithful, but when the town begins to hunt down the protagonists, all hell breaks loose as the fishmen hunt down our hero, Paul, intending to sacrifice him to the elder god that has taken over the town.
The crux of it all is when Paul is captured alongside an innocent old vagrant, and as punishment, the cultists of Dagon de-mask the old man in a horrifyingly long, slow, and highly detailed sequence. What makes the scene so much worse is the old man’s reaction. He groans in prolonged pain as the cultists take his face, and Paul, and the viewers, are forced to watch in agonizing detail.
Dagon is an underrated gem as far as horror movies are concerned, and this scene is something you’ll never forget.
