10 Horrific Horror Movie Scenes You Can’t Unsee
7. Martyrs - Making Of A Martyr
Pascal Laugier’s French horror movie Martyrs is a film that remains to this day as one of the hardest to sit through. Although it gained an American remake in 2015, there’s no denying that the original 2008 film is better, and much, much more disturbing. Because of its horrifying nature, before the film was ever started it was rejected by all the big French studios, rejected by a lot of actresses, and rejected by a lot of critics as well, as the reception to Martyrs was highly polarizing.
One look at the film and one can definitely understand why: the film’s story is about a physically abused young woman who returns to the house she was tortured at in order to get revenge, but she, and her friend, fall victim to a deranged cult who believe that they can create ‘Martyrs’ - women who can speak with god - by torturing said women until they nearly die. The film contains many scenes of violence, murder, mutilation and self-mutilation, and the final act remains to this day as one of the most horrifying scenes ever put to film.
The continued and seemingly endless torture of the main protagonist is highly distressing to sit though, and many who watch this movie, even hardened fans of gore movies, can only watch these final moments once due to the horrific implications and highly realistic special effects.
