Next up, it's Alien, the all-time classic that changed the sci-fi genre. Anyone who has seen the film knows the most iconic moment comes around a third of the way in. To this day it's one of the most shocking moments in any major release.

It all starts with John Hurt's Kane exploring a derelict ship, venturing into a cavern filled with alien eggs. The Facehugger leaps out, taking both him and the audience by surprise.

Rushing back to the ship with the parasite wrapped around Kane's face, his colleagues are unable to remove it by hand. The creature later detaches by itself and dies. Kane seems unharmed by his ordeal and appears rather healthy, but the true horror emerges hours later over the crew's final dinner.

As they eat, Kane suddenly collapses onto the table, convulsing violently. His chest starts to rupture and, in an explosion of blood, the Xenomorph bursts its way out. It kills the ship's navigator instantly and runs off into the ship, kicking off a deadly hunt in its winding corridors.

Even over 40 years after its original release, the very first birth of the Xenomorph remains utterly terrifying. A lot of that comes down to it being done in one take - and while the cast knew where the creature would come from, they didn't know about the bursting blood.
