10 Horrific Sci-Fi Movie Moments That Come Out Of Nowhere

8. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes - The Simian Flu Spreads

As far as sci-fi reboots go, few have been as successful as the modern Planet of the Apes series. With its stellar first effort releasing in 2011, Rise laid the groundwork for a brilliant cinematic trilogy.

At the film's climax, Caesar and his brethren escape captivity and charge the Golden Gate Bridge to find their new home in the surrounding forests. The bond between the ape and his human owner Will Rodman is severed and the two sides have to come to terms with their own needs.

You think it's all over, but then we cut to a pilot on his way to work at the local airport. As it turns out, he's patient zero for the deadly simian flu. As he bleeds from his nose, the man dismisses it as nothing and proceeds to his flight. As we pan up to the many flights, a frightening conclusion ensues.

As the credits roll and the foreboding music plays, we see the virus transmission vector mass-multiply as it rapidly spreads around the globe. One flight quickly splits off into hundreds of viral pathways.

This is a great way of setting up humanity's downfall, but this final sequence hits so much harder with the current pandemic we're all going through. With so many humans, it's all too easy for a deadly plague to spread.
