Moving back to the 2000s, we have a big budget re-imagining.

The 2005 remake of the War of the Worlds is generally well regarded, even if its characters and stories don't measure up to the original classic. It was handled by filmmaking auteur Steven Spielberg.

Spielberg's fourth major effort into science fiction was definitely his darkest release. At the time some felt he attempted to capture the atmosphere of the 9/11 attacks with missing people and individuals caught up in the chaos. This is exactly what happens to Ray Ferrier and his two children, Robbie and Rachel.

Having procured a car on the initial escape, the trio get close to the Hudson River. However, once the other survivors clock on, a sinister sequence ensues. Desperate to get away from the alien tripods, an angry mob attacks the car, dragging Ray and Robbie out for a brutal brawl. It was quite the swerve from the filmmakers, considering the picture's 12A rating.

The trio are eventually forced to abandon the vehicle, but the man who steals it doesn't last long as the people immediately start tussling over it again after they leave. In a film loaded with desperate moments of survival, this one hammered home the every man for himself mentality.
