As far as dystopian fiction goes, few efforts have been as widely well regarded as Children Of Men. Released in 2006 and directed by Alfonso Cuaron, it remains a powerhouse picture that shows humanity on the verge of collapse.

Much of the film's depressing atmosphere stems from events occurring in the background. As Theo joins his former partner Julian to ferry Kee to safety, we're reminded just how ruthless this future world can be. A simple drive through a forest abruptly turns into a nightmare.

Amongst a grey and bleak world, the characters get a moment of reprieve when Theo and Julian reconnect through an old joke. It seems they finally have some time to relax, but then a flaming car is pushed into the road to block their path. What follows is one of the most intense single-shot sequences in film history.

The group is beset by a vicious mob who assaults the vehicle, shooting Julian dead in the process. It's a brutal scene that never moves out of the car the scene began in. We feel we're trapped in the car with the characters as they desperately try to escape death and the prying eyes of the law.

Children of Men still stands out today for these sequences.
