10 Horrific Sci-Fi Movie Moments That Come Out Of Nowhere
4. Sunshine - Pinbacker Strikes
Now we come to Danny Boyle's Sunshine, which came out in 2007; a film criminally underrated at the time that didn't manage to make back its budget. In the years since, it's become a cult favourite thanks to its grim atmosphere and making space itself one of the creepiest elements of the package.
Faced with a dying sun, humanity sends a crew of astronauts on a one-way-trip to reignite it and save the world. It's certainly not an easy task as they face countless perils. One minor mistake could result in failure.
With most of the team having sacrificed themselves for the survival of the species, only a small handful remain to ferry the bomb to its destination. But as physicist Robert Kappa (Cillian Murphy) investigates the vessel, he is shocked to find a fifth person onboard. This is the insane Captain Pinbacker, former commander of the previous expedition.
As the sole survivor of Icarus I, Pinbacker's extremist beliefs and flayed skin have brought him to a nihilistic goal: carry out God's will and ensure humanity's extinction.
By taking a slash at Kappa and beginning his plan to sabotage Icarus II, this previously unseen threat abruptly changes the genre to a slasher flick. Not every viewer agreed with this change, but the moment doesn't lose its shock factor.
