1. Naru Breaks A Major Native American Taboo - Prey
Prey concludes with Comanche warrior Naru (Amber Midthunder) facing off against French fur trappers, and she quite ingeniously does away with the one remaining Frenchman by whistling, in turn luring the Predator to their position.
Yet there's considerably deeper and eerier thematic meaning to this act than a superficial reading would suggest.
In Comanche culture, it's considered incredibly taboo to whistle at night, amid the belief that doing so will summon evil spirits, and so this certainly isn't something Naru would typically do.
But of course, it can be argued that the Predator is itself basically symbolic of an evil spirit being summoned by Naru to do her brutal bidding, or that Naru was simply so desperate to resolve her situation that she broke a seriously held belief in the quest for her own survival.
The whistle was actually suggested to director Dan Trachtenberg by Jhane Myers, a member of both the Comanche Nation and Blackfeet Nation who served as a producer on the film.
