Throughout the course of George Sluizer’s The Vanishing, aka Spoorloos, protagonist Rex (Gene Bervoets) is obsessed with uncovering the truth about what happened to his girlfriend when she inexplicably disappeared without a during their trip to France.

Three years later, Rex is as determined as ever to find out what happened to her on that fateful day to the point the mystery has all but consumed him. One day, however, Rex is approached by a stranger (Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu) who claims to be the one who kidnapped his girlfriend. But instead of simply telling Rex what happened, he informs him that the only way he’ll ever know what happened to her is if he experiences her fate for himself. After some moments of deliberation, Rex decides to accept the kidnapper’s proposal.

As the mystery of what happened to this woman claws at viewers over the course of this eerie chiller, audiences will be as enthralled to know the truth as Rex. What neither were prepared for, though, was how grim the long-awaited answers were.

The film ends with Rex waking up buried alive in a coffin to wait for his death. Like his girlfriend before him, he's vanished without a trace. Nobody can save him now.
