10 Horror Films Based On Shocking True Events
3. The Possession
The Possession is a creepy horror movie that was released in 2012. Directed by Ole Bornadel, it centres around a young girl whose behaviour changes dramatically after her dad purchases a gift for her from an estate sale – an old box (which turns out to be a Jewish Dybbuk box, housing a negative, demonic energy).
The Possession is based, allegedly, on true-life accounts. Now somewhat of a legendary story, the box was originally sold on Ebay. It contained hair, a dried flower, pennies, a slab of granite and a cup. The buyer, who won the auction on the website, soon began to experience strange and unsettling experiences after taking the item into his home. It was soon discovered that the original seller had had terrifying experiences of his own and had sold it to rid himself of the cursed/haunted object.
In some of the more frightening encounters said to have resulted from contact with the box was a woman who had a stroke after touching it, and apparently the newest owner started losing his hair. All of this was mixed in with some drama and poetic license to create what is a fan favourite - The Possession. A film solid in scares and tension.
