10 Horror Films For People Who Don’t Like Horror

2. Se7en

This crime/thriller/horror will mess you up if you€™re fourteen and watching it late at night (yeah, OK, maybe I€™m speaking from experience). Serial killers are no fun, especially when they are patient, methodical, and clever. Se7en is probably the best known and most widely viewed film on this list, so I won€™t spend too much time describing it (in a nutshell, Kevin Spacey is killing people guilty of each of the deadly sins). But I do want to laud it. As much as it terrified me twenty years ago, it also had one of the most lasting effects of any movie I€™ve seen. Part of that is due to the horror certainly€”I don€™t know how many times I€™ve wondered which part of my body I would slice off to equal one pound of flesh. Clearly love handles aren€™t a good idea. But part of its effectiveness is also thanks to the quality of the film and the intelligence of the script. David Fincher has become one of the most respected directors in the industry, and his talent is on full display here. The four leads are all Oscar winning or nominated performers and the film itself was nominated for editing. For those of you who like that sort of thing, you€™ll get your sadistic kicks from seeing death by food, a head in a box, and€uh€ that €œlust€ contraption. But beyond these horrific elements, Se7en leaves its mark like only excellent cinema can. And as a bonus, you will forever after get that Trivial Pursuit question about the seven deadly sins correct.

I humbly claim the title of renaissance man. I am a professional writer (published playwright), college soccer coach, world traveler, crime-fighting vigilante, part-time juggler, serious hiker, coin collector, counseling student, and doting father/husband among many other roles. (OK, one of those may not be true.)
