10 Horror Films For People Who Don’t Like Horror

1. Let The Right One In

So far we€™ve hit zombies, serial killers, terrorists, and the apocalypse. But there is an obvious absence€”vampires. Therefore the number one film on this list had to be Twilight. It€™s horror, right? Oh, horrible and horror aren€™t the same thing? Let the Right One In is as touching a horror film as is possible to have. The friendship at the center of the film between Oskar and Eli is innocent and gentle and caring and just so happens to involve a vampire. Oskar is a lonely boy who is bullied at school and doesn€™t have a satisfying family life. One night he meets Eli who is nice to him. They become friends and once he realizes that she is a vampire, it doesn€™t matter. She is one of the few good things in his life. But of course a vampire has to eat. I won€™t reveal any more except to say that the conclusion is both satisfying and disturbing. This is a little Swedish film that barely made $2 million in the US. But it also was nominated as the best foreign language film at the BAFTAs and earned enough praise and buzz that there was an English remake (which, admittedly, I€™ve not seen). As a rule, horror films are not going to move you, but Let the Right One In absolutely will. So there you have it. Ten quality films that reside partially or fully in a genre I usually swear off. Let me know how your list compares.

I humbly claim the title of renaissance man. I am a professional writer (published playwright), college soccer coach, world traveler, crime-fighting vigilante, part-time juggler, serious hiker, coin collector, counseling student, and doting father/husband among many other roles. (OK, one of those may not be true.)
