6. The Cove
Now wait, before you reject this entry because its an Oscar winning documentary, let me ask you to compare the amount of blood and deaths we see in The Cove to just about any other horror film. The ocean literally turns red. The fact that its a documentary, meaning were watching it really happen, just makes it more horrific. Ultimately it doesnt matter that the creatures being slaughtered are dolphins and not humans. We have enough capacity for empathy to recognize horror in all its forms. The Cove is also as exciting a cinematic experience as any Hollywood thriller. The filmmakers risk being jailed or worse to capture the footage of the cruelty to these intelligent creatures. They developed specially camouflaged video cameras and employed skilled divers who can hold their breath for an amazing amount of time (so as to not have bubbles give them away). The result is an espionage film that uncovers layer upon layer of crime and abuse. To horror fans, I challenge you to sit through this and not experience many of the same emotional reactions that Freddy and Jason provide you and to everyone else, brace yourself for an exciting, uncomfortable, and important story.
