10 Horror Films Much Weirder Than You Remember

5. From Beyond

In this HP Lovecraft adaptation, mad scientist Edward builds a resonating device that amplifies the host's emotions and perceptions. Edward overloads the machine, turning himself into an insane monster. Worst still, the Resonator opens a doorway to a new reality, filled with demonic creatures.

While rewatching From Beyond, horror fans should be shocked by how well the practical effects hold up by today's standards. However, they might also be surprised by how much gratuitous sex there is.

Although having overly sexualised characters is pretty standard in an '80s B-movie, From Beyond goes way too far. After being exposed to the Resonator, doctor Katherine McMichaels is overwhelmed with desire, compelling her to flirt with anyone she sees.

But she doesn't just try to look for some action; she puts on elaborate dominatrix gear as if she's ready to shoot a porno. (By the way, why was that outfit lying around?)

Though there were plenty of ways to show how the Resonator messes with people's mind, it's bizarre the filmmakers decided to go down this route, especially since Katherine's spontaneous fascination with BDSM played no part in the source material.
