Pedro Almodovar's chilling drama revolves around master surgeon, Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonion Banderas), who has become obsessed with perfecting artificial skin. When his wife Vera (Elena Anaya) dies, Robert becomes highly unstable. While he attempts to work through his grief, his daughter, Norma is raped, which leaves her with an irreversible hatred towards men, especially her father.

To exact his revenge, Robert kidnaps his daughter's rapist, Vicente, and uses artificial skin to surgically transform him into a replica of his late wife. In doing so, Robert will complete his life's work, be reunited with lost love, and destroy Vicente's entire world in one fell, twisted swoop.

Not only is the premise unbearably unsettling, The Skin I Live In leaves viewers deeply conflicted. Since Robert and Vicente have performed acts of unspeakable evil, it's impossible to say for certain which is the monster and which is the victim. Because of the graphic descriptions of the operation and Elena Anaya's towering performance as "Vera," this underrated gem is guaranteed to get suitably under your skin.

If you're on the lookout for a genuinely disturbing film, The Skin I Live is a must-watch.
