10 Horror Films Too Scary To Finish

5. The Conjuring

The Autopsy Of Jane Doe
Warner Bros.

Now arguably, this film could be pinpointed as the beginning of the excellent streak in horror we've had over the past few years. Heralded by James Wan and spawning a ridiculous amount of sequels and spin-offs, The Conjuring brought together old-school sensibilities with modern technology to create something special - a fresh twist on the haunted house trope that reinvigorated a genre.

Featuring Verga Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as married paranormal investigators, the Warrens, they visit a family of seven who fear for their lives after the escalation of supernatural happenings in their home. Things only serve to get creepier and more intense as the film goes on, moving from invisible entities that only the characters can see to bringing their visions into full technicolour on our screen - and they aren't there to play nice.

Based loosely on a true story, it makes it even more horrible to think that this happened to real-life people: and makes it even less appealing to sit out the truly intense exorcism scene that plays out as the finale of the film.
