Horror movies don't get much more infamous than Faces of Death.

The 1978 original was a faux-documentary film which sold itself on the promise of showing real scenes of death on-screen, though in reality the end result was a combination of real and faked footage.

Despite moral outrage over its content, Faces of Death turned a gigantic profit and led to the release of numerous sequels both official and not.

Eventually the series' relevance petered out - coinciding with the wider adoption of the Internet, where such material was available free-of-charge - but Faces of Death's legacy endures as an envelope-pushing work of visual media.

Earlier this year, however, it was announced that a Faces of Death remake was in the works, with Daniel Goldhaber (Cam, How to Blow Up a Pipeline) tapped to direct, while the cast includes Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, and Charli XCX.

It goes without saying that the remake will deviate somewhat from the series' original template, though Goldhaber and co-writer Isa Mazzei nevertheless described their take as an "exploration of cycles of violence and the way they perpetuate themselves online."

The plot reportedly centers around a female moderator of a YouTube-like platform whose job involves filtering offensive and violent content, and discovers a group of people recreating the murders from the original Faces of Death.

It's certainly a bold and intriguing setup, and with a talented filmmaker like Goldhaber involved, it's easy to be optimistic that the end result will at least be interesting.
