10 Horror Films You Didn't Know Were Being Remade
8. The Strangers
The Strangers series sure is a... strange one, given that the original 2008 home invasion horror was a massive box office success, and yet a planned direct sequel never materialised.
A standalone follow-up, The Strangers: Prey at Night, eventually came out an entire decade later, long after audience interest had cooled on the IP, but still turned a profit due to its sensibly low budget.
Last September, it was announced that a most unorthodox remake project was in the works, with Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) being hired to direct a retelling of the first Strangers movie, focused on a couple being terrorised overnight in their Airbnb dwelling.
More to the point, this remake is being used as a launchpad to create a new trilogy of Strangers movies, and crazier still, all three movies were shot back-to-back by Harlin at the end of last year.
Though there's clear franchise potential in The Strangers, going the remake route seems rather pointless given the series' basic overall premise.
Plus, considering Harlin's lackluster rep as a filmmaker these days and that three new films are already in the can, it's tough not to view this as Lionsgate trying to squeeze every last possible drop out of the brand before it's too late.
