10 Horror Monsters That Became The Star Of The Show

5. The Toxic Avenger

Michael Myers
Troma

He’s the victim that becomes the monster, who is a hero that is a monster. Troma movies are so base, so dumb and make so little sense that they actually become quite complicated. But this list is all about celebrating the strange and beautiful relationships audiences have with beloved characters, who are child killers, sadomasochistic demons and cold-blooded forces of nature. So, Toxie and his strange world, where murder is played for laughs, couldn’t be more fitting.

Toxie is the central character and the hero. He looks like a monster, but he saves the innocent. So, he’s a hero, right? Well, he saves the innocent by gutting their assailants. No trial, no jury. So, he’s an antihero, with a tortured soul, like Spawn, or Batman? No, there’s no moral quandary here. He just brutally kills people, and it’s fine.

It’s best not to think too much about it. It’s a spoof. It’s meant to be silly. It’s in the vein of a ludicrous farce, but a farce of murder, rape and animal cruelty.

Troma is unique and bizarre. It combines genres and situations that just don’t fit together, and it doesn’t work. It shouldn’t have an audience, but it does. A large, loyal and fanatical one. It just makes no sense and for some, that’s just what they need.

Toxie is the masthead of that audience, a heroic, murderous janitor, beloved across the globe.
