10 Horror Movie "Facts" That Aren't Actually True
7. Jason Voorhees Always Wore A Hockey Mask
The Friday the 13th franchise focuses on Jason Voorhees; a mentally and physically disabled boy who drowned in Crystal Lake. The lifeguards didn't save him because they were busy... getting busy. This caused Jason's mother, Pamela, to go insane and kill any teenagers in the camp who embraced premarital sex. Jason's reanimated corpse appeared in the climax for a few seconds but he didn't become the main antagonist of the series until the sequel.
In Friday the 13th Part 2, Jason went on a killing spree to avenge the death of his mother. Due to his unnatural appearance, Jason hide his face with a... sack.
Now, Jason had a machete and that catchy theme song, but the filmmakers on the franchise knew he still needed a distinctive look to captivate viewers. While making Friday the 13th Part 3, the effects supervisor, Martin Jay Sadoff, tried to find a cool mask for the series' recurring villain.
Sadoff happened to keep a bag of hockey gear on set because... hey... who doesn't love hockey? When he showed a Detroit Red Wings goalie mask to the director, Steve Miner, he said it was perfect and agreed to use it for Jason's new look.
