Toho's mascot, Godzilla, has gone toe-to-toe with absolutely everything. The irradiated dinosaur has fought the army, monsters, dinosaurs, aliens, robots, mutated flowers, and clones of himself.

But after appearing in 35 films, the original is still considered the best. For those of you who aren't up-to-date with the story, Godzilla is a prehistoric reptile who was encased in ice before he was exposed to radiation from a nuclear bomb. Not only did the radiation awaken him, it caused him to increase in size until he was as tall as the biggest skyscraper. As the tyrannical behemoth attacked Tokyo, the Japanese government scrambled to find a way to stop him.

Because he went on to appear in dozens of movies, you'd assume the Japanese failed to kill the overgrown lizard. However, the original film concluded with the title monster being shredded down to his skeleton by an Oxygen Destroyer.

Because Godzilla became a monster hit, Toho realised they had to turn the story into a franchise and whipped out a sequel nine months later. This means that the Godzilla in the original film is a completely different creature than the one who appears in the rest of the series.
