10 Horror Movie Casting Choices That Shouldn't Have Worked (But Did)
8. Kristen Wiig - Mother!
Throughout the 2010s, Kristen Wiig established herself as one of the most bankable and prolific comediennes in Hollywood, and so it was a surprise to see her cast in a villainous role in Darren Aronofsky's 2017 horror film Mother!
It just seemed tough to picture Wiig, known for her chirpy and neurotic characters in a bevy of comedies and dramas, bringing menace to a straight horror film.
And while Wiig's role is ultimately fairly small, she absolutely makes the most of her screen time as the terrifying publicist of Him (Javier Bardem), especially in the film's third act when she starts ordering the cultists to perform mass executions, and even kills several hostages herself.
Given that the publicist is initially presented as a more agreeable character, the darker turn quite perfectly subverts the expectations of what audiences believe they're getting from a Kristen Wiig Role, resulting in the single most surprising performance of her entire career to date.
