10 Horror Movie Characters Who BARELY Survived

These characters just barely made it.

Horror movies are more concerned with death than any other genre, and it's basically expected that the vast majority of characters in most horror movies won't make it to the end credits.

Because of course, they're destined to fall prey to the masked killer, monstrous entity, or whatever else might be out there preying upon them.

And then there are those characters who get put so thoroughly through the wringer that survival seems like a slimmest of possibilities, yet they somehow make it to the finish line with their hearts still beating against tremendous, even overwhelming odds.

And that's ultimately the case with these 10 horror movie characters, who despite being subject to horrendous torture both physical and mental, were somehow still alive at the end.

In some cases they very clearly should've been dead, and probably would've been in real life, while others were saved from sure death moments before their number was up.

Whatever the reason, these characters all survived by the pure skin of their teeth, and if things had just been slightly different, they would've been just another victim taking a cinematic dirt nap...

10. Anna Assaoui - Martyrs

Gerald's Game
Wild Bunch

Martyrs is one of the most downright unhinged horror movies of the last 20 years, and asks the audience to consider what survival really means anyway.

Though protagonist Anna (Morjana Alaoui) does make it to the end of the movie alive, it's fair to consider whether death would've actually offered her some sweet release.

You see, Anna ends up taken hostage by a secret society who are attempting to discover the nature of the afterlife through the use of "martyrs."

That is, torturing people to the brink of death, believing that such pain will allow them to envisage what lies beyond the mortal realm.

Anna is their latest subject, then, and after being summarily abused, she ends up being surgically flayed, all of the skin being removed from her body from the neck down.

In the final scene, Anna is catatonic but still very much alive, and though the long-term prognosis for a skinned human being isn't good at all, she's still hanging in there the last time we see her.
