In the bleak finale of Philip Kaufman's brilliant remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, it's one of the few remaining survivors, Nancy Bellicec (Veronica Cartwright), who ingeniously discovers they can trick the pod people by simply hiding their emotions.

This allows survivors Nancy, Matthew (Donald Sutherland), and Elizabeth (Brooke Adams) to blend in with the pods - at least for a while.

But even with this brilliant realisation, Nancy is still helpless to prevent the pods' implied takeover of the planet. 

In the chilling final scene, Nancy is keeping up her emotionless ruse, but when she meets up with Matthew, he reveals himself to have been replaced with a pod duplicate.

The obvious implication is that Nancy will herself succumb to the pods moments after the end credits roll, ensuring that despite her crafty scheme to skirt them, it was only inevitable that humanity would fall.
